About ACCA

ACCA is Melbourne’s premier venue for international and local contemporary visual art.

Designed by Melbourne based architects, Wood Marsh, ACCA’s distinctive steel building opened its doors to the public in October 2002. Since its inauguration it has received popular and critical acclaim nationally and internationally and attracted a loyal and growing audience.

ACCA’s exhibition program, overseen by renowned Artistic Director, Juliana Engberg, brings the newest and the best contemporary art to Melbourne audiences. The program combines originally conceived group exhibitions with new commissions from prominent and emerging Australian and international artists.

ACCA’s Education and Public Access Programs

Over 11,000 people attend ACCA’s public and education programs each year. These include a range of programs for secondary and tertiary students, teachers, community groups and the general public.

Schools program

ACCA provides free workshops for secondary students delivered by professional teaching staff. These are tailored each season to link our current exhibition to the schools curriculum. ACCA provides talks to over 4,000 students per annum and practical art workshops for over 500 primary and
secondary students. Education attendances increase each year, with many repeat visitations. Schools often make annual visits to recurrent parts of ACCA’s program such as the annual NEW series.

ACCA also provides education kits and information evenings for teachers. It produces original soundfile guides accessible to students and teachers through our website. The ACCA Education team produces seasonal education fliers and sends regular e-bulletins to teachers with details of education programs.

Go Program

The Go Program is an ACCA initiative supported by the Besen Family Foundation targeting underprivileged schools whose students may not otherwise be able to come to ACCA. The program provides free buses to transport secondary school classes to ACCA for free talks linking the exhibition program to the curriculum.

Arts Immersion

Through the “Arts Immersion: Starting Points” program in partnership with Malthouse Theatre and Chunky Move, ACCA provides several special workshops each year. The program for year 10-12 students from a range of regional Victorian schools enables students to undertake day long workshops with practicing contemporary artists across the 3 art forms of visual arts, theatre and dance.

Partnerships

ACCA participates in ARTSCONNECT9 a Victorian Arts Centre project offering access for regionally based Year 9 level students. From time to time other special collaborations are developed to strategically cater for particular education outcomes.

Infocube & Resource Table

Infocube provides online access to information resources about artists and exhibitions for students and teachers, via purpose built computers in ACCA’s foyer. Other resource material, including catalogues, brochures, media releases and articles about exhibiting artists for each exhibition season, is made accessible on a resource table in ACCA’s foyer.

Public Programs

As well as its various education programs tailored for students, ACCA has a number of programs designed for public access and lifelong learning. These include regular talks by ACCA staff, artists and public commentators as well as special purpose seminars, lectures and forums.
