Daniel von Sturmer, The Field Equation

Responding to ACCA's voluminous main gallery, von Sturmer will create an arrangement of varying scaled plinths supporting sculptural and video events that capture the big and small of things.

Von Sturmer, who will represent Australia in next year’s prestigious Venice Biennale, is well known for his architectural interventions and video experiments using simple, everyday materials. A scrunched-up piece of white-paper slowly unravels itself, or polystyrene cups, rubber bands and spinning coloured disks are turned upside down and around in video projections on custom-made screens.

Born in New Zealand, von Sturmer studied painting at RMIT, but these days works primarily with video and installation. His work centres around ideas of perception and time – how objects and materials can take on new meanings according to their context.

Recent works include Into a Vacuum of Future Events at Anna Schwartz Gallery in Melbourne (2005), Screen Test at the Dunedin Public Gallery, New Zealand, (2004) and the group exhibition 21st Century Modern, at the Adelaide Biennial (2006). Overseas, he has shown works in Belgium, Malta, China, Korea, Germany, Spain and the Netherlands.

“Daniel von Sturmer’s visual experiments engage with the history of painting, sculptural space, kinetics and moving image. They remind the viewer of the wonder of art and illusion,” said Juliana Engberg, Artistic Director of ACCA. “This exhibition will highlight von Sturmer’s fascination for the hidden qualities in every day objects and occurances, in what will be a work of true purity and beauty,” she said.

Von Sturmer is the second recipient of the Helen Macpherson Smith Commission – a partnership between ACCA and the Helen Macpherson Smith Trust which offers a Victorian artist the opportunity to create an ambitious new work of art, accompanied by an exhibition in ACCA’s exhibition hall.
