Naomi Milgrom To Head
Major Australian Arts Organisation

The Chairman of the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art (ACCA), Mr Steven Skala, today announced that he will be retiring from the position in January next year and that Ms Naomi Milgrom will be appointed as his successor.

Ms Milgrom is one of Australia's leading businesswomen and a strong supporter of the Australian Arts community. Ms Milgrom will join the ACCA Board in September prior to her appointment as Chairman in January.

Mr Skala said: "Naomi is a highly accomplished businesswoman. She has a national reputation for her leadership in the arts and a passion for contemporary art. She will be an excellent Chairman for ACCA."

Ms Milgrom is Chairman and CEO of the Sussan Group, Australia's largest specialty fashion retailer which includes Sussan, Suzanne Grae and Sportsgirl. Ms Milgrom has also served on a number of Boards and community based committees, including the Australian Council of Businesswomen, Gertrude Street Gallery and the Family Business Council.

Currently, Ms Milgrom is a Director of the Australian Business Arts Foundation and Chair of the Melbourne Fashion Festival. She is on the Board of the Howard Florey Institute of Experimental Physiology and Medicine and is a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Management. In 2003, Ms Milgrom became a Trustee of the National Gallery of Victoria. She is also a member of the International Council of the Tate Modern, London.

The Victorian Minister for the Arts, Mary Delahunty MP, applauded the appointment.

“The leadership Naomi Milgrom has shown on a number of boards, her love and advocacy of the visual arts, will give ACCA every chance to shine”, Ms. Delahunty said.

“I would also like to thank outgoing chairman, Steven Skala. Under his leadership over the last five years, ACCA has transformed itself from a small gallery in the Botanical Gardens to one of Australia's most important contemporary galleries, and his tenacity and business acumen has enabled ACCA to attract support from both the public and private sectors.”

In commenting on her appointment, Ms Milgrom said that she was delighted to be joining the Board of ACCA.
“Since it opened its doors in its striking new premises at Southbank two years ago, I have admired the bravery, vision and merit of the ACCA program,” Ms Milgrom said.

“ACCA is an organisation that stands firmly behind the careers of artists on the local, national and international arena, and has already played a very important role in encouraging, developing and raising the standards of visual arts practice in Australia.

“I also look forward to working closely with ACCA's Board, Executive Director Kay Campbell and Artistic Director Juliana Engberg at this most important arts organisation,” Ms Milgrom said.
