ACCA @ MIRKA
AT TOLARNO HOTEL

Viv Miller

Opens from August 22, 2007

A selection of works by Viv Miller exploring the ‘lightness and heaviness’ of the natural world, will be the next to feature at the ACCA @ Mirka at Tolarno Hotel.

Miller uses a range of materials and textures, from the painterly to the plastic, to create sublime, highly layered drawings and paintings of the natural world. Volcanoes erupt and cherry blossoms bloom in works that playfully explore the limits and problems of representation and expression.

Based in Melbourne since 2004 and a former resident of the Gertrude Contemporary Art Spaces, Viv Miller’s practice is both abstract and representational, influenced by natural imagery, computer graphics, ‘bored looking doodles’ and Japanese and Western artistic traditions.

Born in 1979, Viv completed a Bachelor of Visual Art (Honours) at the University of South Australia in 2000, and was subsequently awarded a studio residency at the Experimental Art Foundation. In 2004 she moved to Melbourne and undertook a two year studio residency at Gertrude Contemporary Art Spaces. She has exhibited widely across Australia in a broad range of artist-run, government funded and commercial galleries, and is represented by Melbourne gallery Neon Parc.

In this exhibition, Miller explores lightness and heaviness, and how these properties mark out our understanding of the world, both physically and conceptually. “I like to imagine them as if they could be directly distilled and captured within the confines of a painting or a drawing”, she says.

“I love the fantasy of Viv’s works,” says ACCA’s Artistic Director Juliana Engberg. “There is another worldliness about them. I suppose it is the combination of the sci-fi meeting the natural world that her paintings explore. In her imagination the brittle digital world morphs into a playful organic extravaganza.”

ACCA @ MIRKA is a collaboration between the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art and Mirka at Tolarno Hotel, presented by Sanpellegrino. ACCA will curate four projects by emerging Australian artists each year, continuing the tradition of bringing great contemporary art to this unique and historic restaurant space.
