Razzle dazzle down at Mirkas
The second exhibition of works curated by the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art for Mirka at Tolarno features the mesmerising, hypnotic drawings of Melbourne - artist Matt Hinkley.
Diners at the freshly renovated St Kilda institution will be captivated by Hinkley’s meticulously rendered, abstract drawings inspired by design aesthetics and digital graphics.
Referencing 60s Optical Art, Hinkley uses ink on paper to turn graphic material into works of sheer beauty. Patterns are constructed with reverence to the qualities of the materials he works with – the surface of the paper, the softness of the pencil or the texture of a found image. Everyday patterns and graphics explode in size and scale, transformed into works of art.
ACCA’s Artistic Director Juliana Engberg says: “Matt Hinkley’s dynamic Neo-Op works dazzle the eye in a game of perception and illusion. Mirka’s walls will shimmy and pulsate under Hinkley’s optical spell.”
Fresh from a successful solo exhibition at Neon Parc in November last year, Hinkley recently curated a group exhibition, also at Neon Parc. Hinkley has previously exhibited with ACCA for +Plus Factors, at Gertrude Contemporary Art Spaces, and Artspace in Sydney.
Matt Hinkley at ACCA @ Mirka: June 12 – August 19, 2007.
ACCA @ MIRKA is a collaboration between the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art and Mirka’s at Tolarno Hotel presented by Sanpellegrino. ACCA will create four small exhibitions of work by emerging Australian artists each year, continuing the tradition of bringing great contemporary art to this unique and historic restaurant space.
