Laresa Kosloff explores the dynamics of sport and abstraction in a new exhibition at ACCA @ Mirka.

A new work to be shown in ACCA’s ongoing exhibition series at Mirka at Tolarno Hotel, sees Melbourne artist Laresa Kosloff extend her interest in the way the human body transforms itself in the pursuit of sport.
In this new, multi-screen video work, three performers are filmed from four different perspectives in what appears to be a strange game… trying on different tracksuits. Filmed in a local primary school sports-yard, the performers undertake various gestures and physical tasks in custom made tracksuits, creating the illusion of weightlessness and levitation.
Kosloff’s practice traverses a range of mediums and applications, including Super 8 film, choreographed video, hand-drawn animation, installation and drawing. Recent artworks have explored the formal and conceptual dynamics of sport, early cinematic slapstick and abstraction.
She has previously participated in a number of group exhibitions in Melbourne and overseas, most recently at Glendale Art College in Los Angeles and was selected for ACCA’s NEW06 commissions exhibition. Individual exhibitions of her work have featured at Studio 12, Gertrude Contemporary Art Spaces, Melbourne; Ocular Lab, Melbourne; TCB, Melbourne; Penthouse & Pavement, Melbourne; Westspace, Melbourne; and Grey Area Art Space Inc. Melbourne.
‘Laresa’s works seem always to link to the playful abstractions explored in early modernism, particularly as they relate to the experimentations of the Bauhaus group who saw art and design in many of the everyday aspects of life, work and the theatre of sport. Pattern, shape and geometry are found in the sculpturing of the body in its callisthenic workout,” says ACCA’s Artistic Director Juliana Engberg
