Melbourne artist David Harley will create a series of digitally inspired abstract paintings for the next exhibition at ACCA @ Mirka.
|
The artist, who has just returned from Germany following a solo exhibition at the Nassauischer Kunstverein in Wiesbaden, uses traditional painting techniques to create large scale ‘digital scapes’, which offer the illusion of depth and the chromatic lines, shapes and colours of a digital print.
Harley studied fine art at RMIT and has worked as a non-representational painter, incorporating computer visuals into his paintings since 1996.
Research projects completed at the London Institute and during a residency at the Victorian College of the Arts have seen him extend the use of computer imagery in his work, and today he is seen as a being part of a new generation of artists that have bridged the gap between traditional painting techniques and the vast possibilities that new technology offers art. His practice also involves moving images and musical collaborations with composer/musician Andrew Blackburn and the Melbourne Chorale.
In this exhibition, Harley will create a new work that responds to the Mirka space and extends his interest in illusionistic abstraction.
“We often think of digital work as brittle or pixilated, or in other words, lacking in a sensuality and organic lushness, but David Harley’s works challenge that assumption with paintings that reassert flow and form,” says Juliana Engberg, ACCA’s Artistic Director.
“For the Mirka room David is creating a floor to ceiling corner piece that delivers depth and a kind of visual musicality…a festive, trippy painting that recalls the cool of expressionism and the hots of jazz,” she says.
