Babylonia

An isolated, deserted, detached island sits in the middle of ACCA's main exhibition gallery. Inside an endless corridor is filled with numerous impenetrable doors. Visitors are invited in, but will they ever be able to find their way out.

In this, his first major new work since representing Australia at the Indian Triennial, and winning a Gold Medal at this prestigious international visual arts event, Callum Morton (Australia) reinvents the heroic moments of modernism in a sculptural installation that is part 007, part L'Avventura, part Hanging Rock, part Disneyland and a lot of The Shining.

Morton's miniature universe, the interior of which resembles a luxury hotel, is an inspired mix of James Bond films and theme-park rides like Magic Mountain, Pirates of the Caribbean and Critter Country. If his island existed, he says, it 'would sit next to the freeway, and the convenience store awning, and a stack of balconies. A virtual life.'

Morton, born in Canada in 1965, is known for his large-scale architecturally-inspired sculptures and installations - not surprising considering he studied Architecture and Urban Planning at RMIT before completing a BA in Fine Art at Victoria College Melbourne and an MA in Sculpture at RMIT.

His work has been exhibited in solo shows across the globe - in Los Angeles, Copenhagen and London, as well as several group exhibitions in Berlin, Edinburgh, Vancouver and New Zealand. Most recently he was awarded a Samstag Scholarship at the Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles.

Callum is the inaugural recipient of the Helen MacPherson Smith Trust Commission, a partnership between the Helen Macpherson Smith Trust and ACCA.
