Works from Melbourne’s leading contemporary art space heading to Hamilton.
ACCA Regional Tour #2 (ART#2)
|
ART#2 is the second in a series of exhibitions curated by Melbourne’s renowned Australian Centre for Contemporary Art (ACCA) for galleries around the State.
Not your average ‘art in a box’ touring exhibition, the ART program is curated to suit each regional gallery’s collections, audience, architecture and ambitions.
In July, ART#2’s attention turns to Hamilton. Melbourne-based artist Alex Pittendrigh will undertake a two week residency at Hamilton Art Gallery, creating an elaborate wall mural made from blue-tac that will respond to and reflect the gallery’s decorative art collection. The public have the rare opportunity to see this acclaimed contemporary artist at work in the gallery from 4-17th July as he creates one panel per day towards a final artwork of magnificent proportion and detail.
A highlight will be the free Family Art Making Workshop held with the artist during school holidays at 11am Friday 15 July, where visitors can create their rococo-inspired, sculptural blu-tac works based on the Hamilton Art Gallery collection (bookings recommended on 03 5573 0460).
Melbourne artist Kate Daw will also spend time in Hamilton, immersing herself in local history and craft, and working with the local Embroiderers Guild to create a new work that responds to nearby Edna Walling-designed gardens. Bringing together objects from the Hamilton Art Gallery’s collection and images documenting the artist’s own history, this work will combine into an intricate installation of object, image and text that explores local history and auto-biography.
Works created by Daw during the residency will be displayed in the gallery alongside Alex Pittendrigh’s mural, from July 23rd. A catalogue containing new texts by design writer, Harriet Edquist, and National Gallery of Victoria Decorative Arts curator, Matthew Martin, will also be available during the exhibition.
ACCA is Australia’s major centre for contemporary art, which showcases the latest developments in the national and international contemporary art scenes. It also acts as an essential facilitator for emerging Australian contemporary artists, and over the past nine years has commissioned over 70 new works.
ACCA’s touring program aims to bring the best of contemporary art to galleries around Victoria, offering regional audiences the opportunity to engage with the very latest developments in new art in Australia.
The ART#2 exhibitions will be accompanied by specially prepared resources for school and tertiary groups.
