ACCA @ MIRKA
AT TOLARNO HOTEL

ACCA and Mirka at Tolarno Hotel have joined forces to bring contemporary art to the adventurous patrons of Melbourne's brightest new eatery. In a series of four exhibitions which are set to change with the seasons ACCA will give four young Australian artists a unique chance to show their work in this exciting new satellite venue.

The Tolarno Hotel has always had a tradition of food and art. In the 1960s Georges Mora, restaurateur, gallery owner and curator, and his wife Mirka made the bistro and gallery one of the most famous places in Melbourne, and seminal to the life and vigour of Melbourne's cultural and culinary history.

MATT HINKLEY

June 12, 2007 - August 19, 2007

The second exhibition of works curated by ACCA for Mirka at Tolarno features the mesmerising, hypnotic drawings of Melbourne - artist Matt Hinkley.

Referencing 60s Optical Art, Hinkley uses ink on paper to turn graphic material into works of sheer beauty. Patterns are constructed with reverence to the qualities of the materials he works with – the surface of the paper, the softness of the pencil or the texture of a found image. Everyday patterns and graphics explode in size and scale, transformed into works of art.

ACCA’s Artistic Director Juliana Engberg says: “Matt Hinkley’s dynamic Neo-Op works dazzle the eye in a game of perception and illusion. Mirka’s walls will shimmy and pulsate under Hinkley’s optical spell.”

Fresh from a successful solo exhibition at Neon Parc in November last year, Hinkley recently curated a group exhibition, also at Neon Parc. Hinkley has previously exhibited with ACCA for +Plus Factors, at Gertrude Contemporary Art Spaces, and Artspace in Sydney.
