Background

The Jane Scally Artist Award honours the memory of Melbourne interior design luminary and ACCA foundation board member, Jane Scally (1955-2002).

In a career spanning nearly 30 years, Jane created some of the most inspiring domestic spaces throughout the country. One of Australia's first interior “architects”, Jane was a designer who championed the then fledgling interior design profession and the Interior Design Bachelors Degree at Melbourne’s RMIT. She brought a whole new level of expertise and knowledge to the profession as well as a vitality and sense of boldness. Nicknamed the ‘queen of colour’, Jane inspired clients by embracing vibrant shades when neutral shades dominated the Australian design scene. She was a partner at Nexus Designs before establishing her own interior design practice, Jane Scally Design Consultants Pty Ltd. Jane’s company was the colour consultant to Dulux. She was also a keen collector and the founding contributor to The Age newspaper’s interior design column in the “Living” section of the newspaper.

This Award celebrates Jane’s contribution to design, her love of contemporary art, and her recognition of the role of travel and mentoring in shaping our best arts practitioners to achieve world-class artistic outcomes. In keeping with this spirit of generosity, the Jane Scally Artist Award supports a Victorian artist to travel internationally and expand their knowledge and experience.
